plot summary

American ex-soldier RONSON (Dolph Lundgren) has fallen on hard times. He has been reduced to brutal illegal prizefights in the dingy backstreets of a city in Inner Mongolia in an attempt to pay off his debts.

Things go from bad to worse after Ronson is caught in the act and arrested. The judge offers Ronson a choice: pay off all his debts in a month or return to jail. While Ronson is busy debating his limited options, he encounters the alluring ANIKA (Yu Nan), whom he follows down an alley only to be attacked by three thugs. After successfully beating off his attackers, he learns that the fight has been an elaborate audition for Anika’s stepfather CHAMBERS, a wealthy New York art collector.

Chambers offers Ronson enough money to settle all his debts if he will guide an expedition composed of Chambers (William Shriver), Anika, several of Chambers’ men and archeologist ANG SHAW into the rugged mountains of Mongolia. With the help of a secret map, Chambers hopes to locate a fabled temple, said to contain a priceless jeweled Buddhist tapestry known as The Tangka of God Ochirvaani.. Said to possess great spiritual … perhaps even supernatural powers, the Tangka is protected by a deadly curse.

The rugged terrain and hardships of the journey do not deter Ronson and company from their quest, nor do the fierce battles with rival Tangka seekers ZHUKOV and his band of mercenaries. At last the expedition locates the cave containing the sacred temple.

Between the bullets and the booby-traps: who will survive who will claim the prize… and what of the curse?

interesting facts

- Dolph Lundgren had to take over and directed the picture, facing difficult and unanticipated circumstances. Money and crew also came shorter than promised when arrived on location...

- Due to difficult shoot conditions, the screenplay has been heavily re-written and simplified during the production, omitting many twists and sub-plots.

- "Diamond Dogs" has been initially planned to be followed by an indirect sequel entitled "Tumbling Dice", in which Dolph would reprise his role of Xander Ronson, for a new mission in Shanghai.

- "Diamond Dogs" has been released theatrically in China.

webmaster's opinion

Well, for Dolph's first picture filmed in such an exotic and potentially exciting place such as China, the results can be disppointing to say the least. This film didn't turn out as planned and you can tell. If this had been the chance to be filmed accordingly to the original script, then this should have been a winner: a witty and bad ass action adventure as in Indiana Jones meets Rambo. Instead we have the remains of what it could have been, some action for sure, but not a working story and characters. Can be appreciated to the extent of turning your brain off and just watch the mongolian landscapes and uninspired bare knucle and gun fights... Too bad for sharing the lead with artsy film actress Yu Nan on this one. (review based on released producers cut)
