A beautiful, young Israeli woman,
TABITHA, awakens to find her mother being stoned by a group of
people for cheating on her father with a Roman soldier. In lower
Germany TAURO leads an army of Roman troops to a victory over
a Germanic tribe and claims an enemy warrior, BRIXOS, as his
slave. The earth rumbles and lightning strikes during the battle
and at the same time, rattles the palace of the great Roman Emperor,
TIBERIUS.
Tiberius tells Tauro that he must travel to Jerusalem to find
the truth behind the legend of a man, Jesus of Nazareth, who
supposedly rause from the dead. When Tauro comes to Jerusalem,
he encounters Tabitha and her grandmother, saving her from a
petty mugger. Love sparks between the two, but she is forbidden
to touch, much less speak to a Roman.
Tauro's continuing search brings him to Jesus' burial ground
where he was seen after his death. He is later taken to the spot
at which Jesus was crucified. When Tauro and Tabitha next meet
up, he makes a sexual advance at her but she changes the subject
by telling him to visit LAZARUS, a friend of Jesus. Tauro visits
the site where Lazarus was supposedly raised from the dead. Upon
his arrival, Tauro is poisoned by two scoundrels, but it isn't
strong enough to kill him.
That night, Tauro and Tabitha finally kiss and proclaim their
love to each other. When Tabitha's father learns she is in love
with a Roman, he beats her to near death. Tauro rushes to her
aid and she asks him to gel the followers of Jesus to come and
pray for her. He runs to meet Mary Magdalene and Lazarus only
to learn that they have fled to Galilee, the land of Jesus. He
travels there and asks for the help of Mary of Magdalene, who
points him to Mary, mother of Jesus.
Tauro and Brixos leave and on their way borne when they are attacked
by a warrior clan who kill Brixos, but Tauro survives and returns
to the bed of Tabitha. She is floating in and out of conscious
and it appears he is late, but Jesus' followers come to her side
and pray for her recovery.
After further searching for the truth, Tauro writes to the Emperor
saying he has neither proved nor disproved the arising of Jesus.
He and Tabitha finally have a chance to live their lives together,
in peace.
