The
year is 1999. The place is California - or rather, what's left
of it after the Big One. California has separated along the San
Andreas fault from that devastating earthquake measuring 9.5 on
the Richter scale. Four hundred seconds of hell has changed the
face of America. The ensuing tsunami tidal wave shattered the
coast and the ocean rushed in, filling the enormous fault from
Baja to Death Valley - giving birth to the "New Eastern Sea"and
a new island off the coast of Arizona-"Mohave Island"
- born of the desert wasteland of Central California.
Hovering over the new Eastern Sea is a perpetual dustcloud, a
toxic mist of gas and mineral deposits that effectively jam communication
with the rest of America - if it still exists. The coastal waters
are contaminated, leaving navigation virtually impossible. Old
California is gone, the old way of life is gone and a new order
has begun.
While
quartz-charged lightning licks between the blue mountains to the
earth, the battered western outpost stands like a silent sentinel
to the south. "Fort Edenberg", a lone Marine reserve
depot, is a desert boneyard filled with surplus equipment from
forgotten conflicts, WWII, Vietnam, Korea, Desert Storm...a military
junkyard poised for closing just before the Great Quake. It now
represents a haven in a desert land of perpetual fires, liquefaction,
quicksand, danger and dunes.
Out of this ghostly fort rides a group of high speed nomads, defenders of an old world, saviors of the new, determined to survive: Army Captain Nick Preston, Airforce Captain Sarah McBride, Marine Gunnery Sargeant Lucky Simcoe. Three branches of the military, three different philosophies, one mission: Survive, Restore and Rescue in the aftermath of the Great Earthquake and draw the last line of defense for the new western front of the United States.
Armed
with their ingenuity, they scavenge from the past to create something
new for the future. They map their new world, rescue the forgotten
and defend the coast.
Always searching for food, fuel and fellow survivors...
And
maybe even a bridge back home.
They are the only law in a lost land and the only hope, living
by they're wits, guts and above all, invention.
These are America's last defenders.
And
this is their Last Patrol
CAST OF CHARACTERS
CAPTAIN NICK PRESTON - A 28 year old Captain with a cool exterior and a hot head. Especially when compromise is in the air. A rancher's son from Wyoming, Nick was a born leader. He enlisted in the Army when he was 18. He spent two years in the mud in the Armored Branch where he was an Army Tank driver in Germany and witnessed the end of the Cold War.
Seeing no future on the ground he switched to the Ranger Aviation Branch where he learned to fly Cobras. And later, selected for Special Ops and the top-gun airship of the Army - the Apache Helicopter. He was decorated in Desert Storm where it was clear he was a born leader, an instinctive, spontaneous loner. Exactly what you want in a General, not a Captain. Later, after again proving himself in East European Conflict of 97 he was banished to the D.R.M.O.(Boneyard) after speaking out publicly against The President. She wanted to shut down Military bases right after the conflict. He was on his way there when the Big One hit. Nick functions best in conflict. Now he has one. Played by Dolph Lundgren
CAPTAIN SARAH McBRIDE - A 25 year old Air Force graduate. Originally from Maryland, Sarah was an Air Force brat from a distinguished military family. She is extremely bright, extremely beautiful, and extremely tough. She had to be. She's the daughter of a decorated Air Force General (who was giving a speech in Los Angeles when the Great Quake happened.). After attending and graduating top of her class at the Air Force academy, Sarah worked her way up as a C-130 co-pilot (fixed wing transport) flying ash and trash missions in the European conflict. She never saw combat. Finally she moved to jets and currently instructs in them. She was a natural to become the Air Force "Poster Girl" on every recruiting poster in America. She is now grounded in the desert.
With a scientific background, one of her functions is to map navigational charts. Little did she know she'd be mapping a New World. She had been at the Boneyard on a training mission, but knows Lucky because he's been restoring a birthday present for her father - the WWII trainer he actually instructed on in WWII. Sarah is a muscular, toned beauty with a wicked wit and a by the book\ attitude. She is certain that military contact is going to be reestablished. So she continues to play by the rules in a land without any. In the war of 97 she quickly moved from Corporal to Captain and quickly learned that conflict creates promotion. In the New Island of California, she's got plenty. Played by Sherri Alexander
SERGEANT LUCKY SIMCOE - A Marine Master Sergeant. A Texan with "the old way" firmly implanted in his heart and mind - and mouth. Lucky has been in the desert a long time. Somewhat of a philosopher Lucky can fix anything, and he can break anything too. He's a lover of another era when the country had a common enemy and a common cause. He knows the blood and guts of war and hates the notion that it's some kind of "Nintendo Game". Lucky is a master of invention. He can take almost any bit of broken junk and make it usable, indispensable piece of survival equipment. A gear head with sex appeal. Played by Joe Michael Burke
NEW EDEN:
POPE: Nineteen year old Sioux Indian. Sexy, soulful, dark.
JACOB: Pope's Grandfather. Comedic, wise owl. He has four hundred different ways of cooking dog food. Can read the wind.
ROXY:
Twenty year old veteran of the Harley Davidson branch. A runaway,
with a past who's life had little meaning - until now. Been running
since she was fifteen - could well survive on her own
JESUS DECARRA: Smart, charismatic leader of the Prison gang. Nick's perfect counterpart. Not crazy. Frighteningly sane. Biblical scholar.
CANDY: Lucky's ex-wife, and bane of his existence. Had him thrown out of every military establishment in the States. A Nymphomaniac with a little girl's heart. Played by Rebecca Cross
LIEUTENANT
O.A. PERRY: Downed pilot, rescued from Big Rock, recovers from
Coma but is left with the mind of a boy. A ten year old in a man's
body. Handicapped in mind but not in spirit. A spirit full of
wonder with the new life ahead of him.
THE BONEYARD
DEFENSE REUTILIZATION MARKETING OFFICE is the salvage surplus
yard for the military. Everything that was being cycled out of
the current military was stored there. Everything from copy machines
to B-15s to dog food (California incorporated a new system to
protect the Mexican Border in 96'. Dogs - it worked.) were stored
there. Lucky ran reclamations at the D.R.M.O. and demothed the
engine cocoons, degreased the cosmoline from the weapons systems,
exported the good stuff, tried to salvage the bad. What couldn't
be saved he either sold to museums for static display or targets
for the military.
His world is a yard filled with WWII, Korea and Vietnam era hardware.
Radio antennas, generators, ammo castings, wheels, tires, trucks,
assembled and unassembled airplanes, engines, props, fuselages,
wings... it's a graveyard. But to Lucky Simcoe, it's heaven. There's
a plane that Lucky works on continually, a WWII trainer,a T6-G
and the only one in the yard with a matching set of wings that
even has a prayer to fly... it's a gift for a great General. There
is also the odd bit from the Gulf War. A stray Humvee, and now
the main desert patrol vehicle is parked in the outer yard. This
is the only one Lucky has been working on and heavily modified
for his new Commander in Chief Nick Preston.
