EXT. DESERT - ROADBLOCK - DAY
Cepeda's truck pulls over. The man moves towards the cops blocking the road with their cars.

DISPATCHER
(over radio) Unit two eleven, motorist needs assistance. Overheated car, Highway ten, exit one-twenty-two.

CEPEDA
(to cops) You guys are looking hard enough. You seen anything?

COP
(to Cepeda) No, sir.

DISPATCHER
(over radio)...at Johnson Valley, on two-four- seven...

Unaware, Santee drives towards the roadblock.

DISPATCHER
(over radio)...having an investigated abandoned vehicle...

OFFICER
(to himself) Jesus Mary!

The Ferrari's brakes screeches as he stops the car. The Officers prepare to fire.

OFFICER
(to Officers) Okay, men, ready.

CEPEDA
(to Officers) Hold your fire. Easy...

Full speed, Santee backs off. The cops run to their vehicles.

CEPEDA
( to Officers) No, no, you just stay... Stay where... Just...

Santee drives into the opposite direction. The cop cars begin to chase him.

CEPEDA
(to Officers) Hold it! I said stay here! Stay here! Hold your positions! He's just coming back this way!

Santee drives towards the road. All the police cars after him.

EXT. DESERT ROAD (MOVING SHOT) - DAY

Suddenly, the Lamborghini appears at the Ferrari's tail. Santee turns, Severance does the same and the expensive cars have to drive through the group of squad cars in pursuit. Finally, only the Ferrari and the Lamborghini fly through the site where Cepeda has been left alone. Cepeda hurries into his truck.

RLIDISILL
(OS) (to Severance) When we get there, you go in first.

SEVERANCE
(to Rudisill) Fuck you!

RUDISILL
(to Severance) Fuck you!

SEVERANCE
(OS)(to Rudisill)(low voice) Fuck you!

The Lamborghini chases the Ferrari on the road up the mountain. Each car bumps on the other, trying to push the other one off the road. Far behind, Cepeda and the police cars chase them as fast as they can.

CEPEDA
(over radio) Severance! Severance! This is Cepeda, we're on the mountain behind you, three or four minutes back.

SEVERANCE
(OS)(to Rudisill) Here, light this for me.

RUDISILL
(OS)(to Severance) What are you fuckin' crazy?

SEVERANCE
(OS) (to Rudisill) What, do you want me to be nervous?

The cars continue to bump into each other. Santee takes a little advantage over Severance. Suddenly, Santee reaches the gate that closes the park and has to turn around quickly.

SANTEE
(OS) Oh, shit, the fire gate is down!

EXT. PARK - DAY

The Lamborghini stops. Severance and Rudisill come out with their guns in hand. The Ferrari is embanked and Santee and Rita have to abandon it.

SANTEE
(to Rita)C'mon, Rita. Come on.

Santee limps as he moves with Rita to the rocks. He reloads his gun.

SANTEE
(to Rita) Stay down and you'll live.

Severance and Rudisill go after Santee and Rita. He walks away as Rita hides behind a rock.

CEPEDA

(over radio) Severance..! Severance...! This is Cepeda. We're behind you.

EXT. DESERT - HIGHWAY - DAY

Many police cars approach full speed.

CEPEDA
(over radio) Are you still on the road? Severance! What is your position?

EXT. PARK - DAY

Santee climbs up the mountain. Severance and Rudisill look for him. Santee gasps and groans in pain as he reaches the top of a hill.

EXT. DESERT - HIGHWAY - DAY

The squad cars move up the road fast.

CEPEDA
(over radio) (Cont'd.) Severance. If you can hear me, the Highway Patrol have sealed all roads off the mountain. Santee's cornered. Can you hear me?

INT. CEPEDA'S TRUCK (MOVING SHOT) - DAY

CEPEDA
(into radio) Severance, this is Sheriff Cepeda. Come in.

Cepeda bangs on the radio.

CEPEDA
(Cont'd.)(into radio) Severance, Cepeda here...

EXT. PARK - DAY

SEVERANCE
(yells) (to Santee) Santee! Come on out, Santee! Nobody's going to harm you!

Rudisill fires at Santee. Rita runs with a gun and aims at Severance from behind.

RITA
(to Severance) Drop it.

SANTEE
(to himself) Dammit!

Smiling, Severance raises his arms.

SEVERANCE
(to Rita) What is this, darling? An arrest?

RITA
(to Severance) I said drop it.

Severance drops his gun.

SEVERANCE
(to Rudisill) Rudy, this Deputy wants to place us under arrest.

Rudisill shoots at Rita in the leg. She screams and falls to the ground. Rudisill approaches.

RUDISILL
(to Severance) It's Sonny, she don't look like a Deputy.

Rudisill punches Rita on the face.

RUDISILL
(Cont'd.) Looks like an accomplice. Accomplice to a cop killer.

From above the hill, Santee fires at Rudisill, who rolls down the knoll. Severance hurries towards Rita and takes her hostage.

SEVERANCE
(to Santee)(yells) Give it up, Santee!

RITA
(to Santee) (yells) Don't do it. He'll kill me anyway!

SANTEE
(to Severance) (yells) I'm here, Severance. Let her go!

SEVERANCE
(to Santee) (yells) Get down here, kid. And be quick.

Suddenly, Rita elbows Severance and punches him to the floor. Santee runs down the hill towards her. Cepeda and his men have reached the park.

CEPEDA
(to Officer) You take the west ridge.

OFFICER
(to Cepeda) Yessir.

Rita crawls towards a revolver on the ground, but Severance is quicker and steps on her hand. He picks up the gun and cocks it.

SEVERANCE
(to Rita) Hello... g'bye.

From a high rock , Santee jumps over Severance and both men fight, but Santee is too weak and Severance kicks him to the edge of a cliff from where Santee hangs for his life. Severance steps on Santee's right arm and he pulls it away, hanging only from his left.

SEVERANCE
(to Santee) I always taught you to hang on to the bitter end, Santee. You're not givin'up on me, are you, kid?

Severance steps onto Santee's left hand causing Santee to lose the grip and fall down the cliff.

SEVERANCE
(to Santee) So long.

Santee falls onto a stone ridge and stumbles on his feet. Cepeda and his men are running towards the cliff.

CEPEDA
(to Officers) Get up there! Move! Move!

Without strength, Severance picks up Rudisill's revolver and moves towards Rita. He aims at her.

SEVERANCE
(to Rita) Nice meetin' you.

With a scream, Santee jumps on Severance from behind, holding the man's hand with the gun .

SEVERANCE
(to Santee) Kid...! Kid... we don't need any of these people. Watch this.

Rudisill sits up on the ground .

RUDISILL
(to Severance) Fuck you !

Severance shoots, killing him. Santee throws Severance on the ground and beats him up on the face. Severance's mouth and nose bleed. Santee picks up a huge rock and raises above Severance's head.

SANTEE
(to Severance) This is for Eddie.

SEVERANCE
(to Santee) Go ahead, kid. Just do it. I'd do it to you.

Cepeda and his men surround Santee, stopping him.

OFFICERS(to Santee)
Hold it, Santee! Don't move, Santee! Do not move!

Santee is pushed to the ground. Cepeda helps Severance up.

CEPEDA( to Officers)
Okay, boys. Stand back.

SEVERANCE(to Cepeda)
Thank God you're here. Santee killed Rudisill.

CEPEDA(to Severance)
You're under arrest.

SEVERANCE(to Cepeda)
What?!

Cepeda handcuffs Severance.

CEPEDA( to Severance)
I just saw a video of you shootin' Deputy' Agnos, Severance. You' re goin' up the river.

SEVERANCE( to Cepeda)
Fuck you!

Cepeda forces Severance towards the cars.

CEPEDA(to Severance)
Guess you didn't see the surveillance cameras, did you? Too bad. You have the right to remain silent. If you give up the right to remain silent, anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law. You have a right to speak to an attorney...

The cops walk after Cepeda. From the ground, wounded Rita and wounded Santee look at each other, weakly.

EXT. JUNKYARD - DAY

CAM pans slowly L/R over the place.

RITA(OS) (to Santee)
Have you heard from Mara and the kid?

SANTEE(OS) (to Rita)
Yeah, they went back to New Orleans. I heard they ah, came into some money.

RITA(OS) (to Santee)
Really? Well, I guess I'd better get goin'.

CAM stops on Santee and Rita's legs.

SANTEE(OS)(to Santee)
Ah, Old Woody here' s got a crush on you.

RITA(to Santee)
Oh, is that right?

SANTEE(to Rita)
Yeah, yeah, well, he's gonna be mad as hell if he finds out you left, and he couldn't see you.

RITA(to Santee)
You can count on me coming back around. 'Cause there are a couple of felons I'm supposed to keep my eye on.

SANTEE(to Rita)
Yeah?

RITA(to Santee)
Yeah.

CAM pans up to reveal them talking. Rita wears a police uniform.

SANTEE(to Rita)
Okay. Well...(clears his throat)

RITA(to Santee)
Next time you need a four by four, you knew who to call.

Santee extends his hand to Rita. She shakes it and he drags her towards him and kisses her. She responds to the kiss. Then, she pulls herself away and gets in her police car and drives off .
