Woo playing 'Blackjack'

By RAY RICHMOND, Variety, Oct. 29, 1997

Director John Woo, flush from the success of his $100 million summer actioner "Face/Off," started shooting Monday in Toronto on the new Alliance TV action drama series pilot "Blackjack" --- which has been bought by cable's USA Network for a 1998 premiere.
The two-hour film, helmed by Woo from a script by Peter Lance, stars Dolph Lundgren as a onetime U.S. marshal now commissioned to protect high-profile clients in matters of security. Pilot finds him becoming a bodyguard for a supermodel who has been targeted.

Sources said that while "Blackjack" has been given no guarantees of moving beyond the pilot stage, it's presumed that with Woo's involvement, it's virtually assured of becoming a USA staple.

Project is Woo's second foray from theatrical films. The first was the two-hour telefilm "Once a Thief," a 1995 backdoor pilot for Fox Broadcasting made in collaboration with Alliance as part of his exclusive deal with the Canadian production house.
